A Memory, A Song: Huntington ‘09

I close my eyes, the old piano swells
with sweetness, salt, and sand, old summer songs.
A joyful ghost arises, chimes like bells;
she summons me, she bids me walk along
the shore at Huntington. In softer years
I’d sweep myself into the iron sea
and let Poseidon wash away my fear,
unbind me for that moment — somewhat free
but never free enough. The ghost recalls
my body to the sand, a lifetime’s weight
returns — and I diminish and I fall
back to the body, life, prescribed by Fate.

Relax into that melody. The fight
continues soon. Dance in the bonfire light.
