A Year of Sonnets #84

For old friends, far away.
Perhaps it’s just a jagged cut of light
that fills my bones when I remember you;
a shot of Novocaine, some pure delight
that tears into the melancholy blue
and I recall the hopeful songs we’d raise,
the promises we spoke into our skin,
a stellar nursery alight with praise
unknowing all the promise held within,
by chance and lovely labor set aglow,
a testament to joy and sacrifice
whose dividends we never truly know
from our perspective in Heaven’s device.
And though I am a shadow next to stars,
I send my love still, keenly, from afar.
