Reading is such an important part of being a writer.

Most of you will have heard this advice before. It gets passed around a lot. But for a lot of new writers, it seems counter-intuitive. They’ll brag about how little they read, thinking that it some how makes them special or unique, like their ideas are untainted by whatever everybody else is writing about.

It’s absolute nonsense.

And, I should add, that most of those people don’t go on to finish the novels they start. They’re the amateurs, like I talked about in this post.

They’re all pride and ego before they get hit with the realization that writing a novel is a lot of grind-work. And they either learn how to deal, or they flake out.

Most of them flake out, let’s be real.

But I’m not here to bash new and inexperienced writers. I was one of them, one upon a time. I’m still one…
