We step away in morning light, diffuse
enough to break the colors of our clothes.
The world may swallow us, Fate may refuse
to keep us on our way. Oh, heaven knows
how we may lose ourselves to darkness yet,
be caught by monsters far beyond our ken.
The learnèd keep no confidence, would bet
against our bones returning. Where or when
might we announce our victory? Unsure —
we cleave to hope as long as Hope allows.
On weary feet, surrender may allure
and Faith may crumble at a touch — or now!

Whate’er our hearts may whisper, we walk on
in doubt — but nonetheless, our will is strong.
