Unbolt the Writing Door, Let the World In
Yesterday, I wrote about when it’s time to keep the writing door shut. Today, I’m talking about opening the door.
Because there is going to be a time, as a writer, where you have to let the world in. Unless your only goal is to write for yourself, then instantly hide the words away for nobody else to see, you’re going to want other people to read your work.
There’s going to be a time where you have to be fearless. But within reason.
Yesterday, I had a comment on my other post from Megan Johnson:
I’m terrified to share too much of my work — completed stuff not withstanding — because I’m afraid of it being stolen.
This is, on one hand, a reasonable fear. Considering how much of the writing community is over the open web, it’s easy to imagine somebody coming in and snapping your work. But the problem isn’t with sharing or not sharing, but, rather, with how you share. If you share smart, your work will be safe.
I don’t share anything of substance about my story to the public-at-large.
