When the Wheel Stops
A Year of Sonnets — 025/365

When you have gone beyond where water flows
how do you swim to life and light again?
Uncomprehending how the circle goes
and how to start a thing that can’t begin
by any mortal means — you fall away;
it keeps on going, you have lost your place —
there’s no reprieve and nothing left to say:
the world forgets, for you have lost the grace
that life inspires within all lovely things.
Yes, grief will tarnish every light to gray
and you must trust the quiet Stillness brings —
the only mercy that survives the day.
This vantage lets you watch the world: it turns,
and though you’d give your heart, there’s no return.
